研究計畫摘要
外語教學暨資源中心將持續推動現有之3大工作項目:(一)開設線上英語自學課程、(二)開設亞洲語言課程,以及(三)強化外語自學資源。
線上英語自學課程之開設
線上英語自學課程方面,外語教學暨資源中心將持續開設大學部及研究生選修之線上英語課程。針對大學部的線上課程有「高階英語(一)、(二)」,供免修大一英文者選修,持續提高其英語口說及學術英語方面能力;另開設「科技英語」、「醫學英語」兩「專業英語」課程,提升學生專業領域的英語能力,並擬於108學年度新增「學術英語」課程,提升學術英語及批判性思考能力。研究生線上英文開設有(一)~(四)、由簡至難的分級課程,逐漸提升英語文能力,最高等級之「研究生線上英文(四)」,分別有「進階閱讀策略」、「人文社科」、「科技與醫學」、「經濟與商業」課程,研究生線上英文朝著擴展學生英語文能力的深度與廣度做設計。
亞洲語言課程之開設
亞洲語言課程方面將持續開設基礎及中階課程,滿足學生之多元外語學習需求。配合國家「新南向政策」,延續過去規劃,開設韓語及泰文、越南文、馬來文、印尼文、菲律賓文等5個東南亞語種課程,並擬新增開設一不同東南亞語種課程。此外,外語教學暨資源中心之網路外語教學團隊所設置之「東南亞語文暨文化」學習資源網站將持續擴充現有內容,提供豐富的課外學習資源,並另外持續建置菲律賓語及馬來文MOOC課程,提供更多知識性、文化性的真實語料延伸學習資源。
外語自學資源之強化
除自學課程與教材的研發,中心仍會不斷在多元自學資源的建置上努力,包含每月出刊2期的「英語學習電子報」,多年來一直為臺大最多訂閱人數之電子報,亦將持續繼續執行多項自學認證辦法,除了多項外語自學認證外,亦包含優化「E-freeway線上英語自學認證」、「Presentation ABC」簡報認證之外,並完整推出「高階英語字彙達人」三階段認證,並擬新增「TED Talks自學達人認證」,以期培養學生自主學習能力。
中心將繼續舉辦多場學習活動,促進校內不同類型、目的、需求的外語學習,包含培養口語能力的「English Corner午間會話課」、「說說角英語口語訓練工作坊」以及搭配中心軟體介紹的主題式「E-freeway Workshop工作坊」,並舉行英語學習講座,持續強化臺大的英外語教育資源。
中心已累積豐富的英語教學資源與經驗並積極於校園內推展數位化時代的網路資源運用與自學策略,中心未來希望能持續推動臺大的英語自學資源強化與各項教學任務,提供臺大師生一個豐富的外語學習網服務。
Abstract: Multicultural Cognition-Oriented Courses of English and Asian Languages Plus the Development of Self-Study Resources
Abstract of Research Project
The Foreign Language Teaching and Resource Center will keep being a core contributor to this ongoing project for the following three missions including designing online English courses, offering Asian language courses and developing self-study resources.
1. The Design of Online Self-Study English Courses
With regard to self-study English courses, as a continuation of the endeavor we are hosting courses in this category for both undergraduates and postgraduates every semester. For undergraduates whose English proficiency is good enough to be exempted from “Freshmen English,” we offer “Advanced English I & II,” which aims for increasing course takers’ speaking ability and academic English proficiency to an even higher level. For undergraduates who have completed “Freshmen English,” we offer two English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses, namely “English for Technology” and “English for Medicine,” to enhance course takers’ English proficiency and knowledge in professional fields. Furthermore, in Fall semester 2019, we plan to offer a new course in English for Academic Purpose to help course takers develop critical thinking and competence in academic English.
For postgraduates, we offer a 4-level course,“Online English for Postgraduates.” Course takers are assigned to the level that fits best with their English proficiency and they can work their way up toward the upper-level courses. The course in Level 4, which is the most difficult one, consists of 4 different themes, which are “Advanced Reading Strategies,” “Humanities and Social Sciences,” “Science, Technology, and Medicine” and “Economics and Business. ” Course takers will acquire an education to deepen and broaden their English proficiency.
2. Programs of Asian Languages
Our center will continue offering basic and intermediate courses of Asian languages to meet the diverse needs of students. To coordinate with the Policy of Southeast Bound, however, the center is committed to providing students with the 5 most spoken languages in East Asia: Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Malaysian, Indonesian and Filipino. Meanwhile, the center intends to set up another Southeast Asian language course in the future.
In addition, the center is going to offer more extended learning resources on the website of Learning, Languages & Cultures of Southeast Asia. Also, the center will keep creating the Massive Open Online Course(MOOC) for the Filipino and Malaysian languages with more learning resources of the authentic corpus regarding the educational and cultural purposes.
The Development of Foreign Language Learning Resources
Apart from developing and maintaining the aforesaid courses and self-learning materials, we spare no effort in improving our services and providing great and diversified self-learning recourses. We issue a biweekly English learning newsletter with the record of owing the greatest number of subscribers at NTU for several years in a row. We will continuously hold various Self-Study Certificate Programs, including several foreign language self-study programs and improving the design of Online English Language Self-Study Cetificate and Presentation ABC Self-Study Certificate Programs. We also offer a total 3-phase Advanced English Vocabulary Self-Study Certificate Program and plan to add the TED Talks Self-Study Program with the aim to develop learner autonomy abilities.
We will keep holding various learning activities that aim at fulfilling individual need of learners with different learning goals and learning styles. These activities include English Corner and ShouShou Corner—English Conversation Group and E-freeway workshops. Besides the thematic workshops we plan to hold to introduce the learning recourses provided by our center to all NTU members, we will also invite guest speakers to provide English learning skills to develop learning resources in our endeavors.
The Foreign Language Learning and Resource Center has accumulated great experience and abundant resources in English teaching. We endeavor to promote effective utilization of the language learning resources on the Internet and self-study strategies in the digital era. Our mission in the future is to continue our dedicated efforts to the development of learning resources and courses. We will continue to bring quality services to all NTU members and create an excellent foreign language learning environment.
