Abstract: Adolescence was defined mostly as teenage youngsters from the age of twelve to eighteen. Yet this definition has been extended to include younger children and older youth in recent years. Due to the deconstruction of family structure, the pervasive intrusion of internet in personal life, and the emphasis on self-choice and self-determination in post-modern era, most adolescents in the 21st contrary are facing prolonged and harsh crises in identity and adjustment. Moreover, since they have more chances to interact with the external world, adolescents are more vulnerable than children to environmental factors, such as the screening policy in education systems, urban development, church organization, public welfare, judicial structure, political atmosphere, societal ideology, ethnic identity, cultural convention, ecological environment, and historic trend. These factors may affect adolescent development pervasively, from their physical health, cognition, emotion, family and peer relationship, moral and value system, self concept, social role, profession planning, romantic relationship and marriage, to their psychological heath. It has been well recognized that psychological problems such as depression, suicide, conduct problems, addiction, bulimia and anorexia often start to show during the period of adolescence. Consequently, how to integrate the above environmental factors with adolescents’ personal characteristics and their developmental outcome and find the best way to choose the necessary book volumes for collection is the most challenging task for the NSC project on expanding the volumes of adolescent psychology. The team in the psychology department of the National Taiwan University (NTU) proposes a five-step model to purchase the most important collection for adolescent psychology. They are, (1) using call numbers and key words to find publications written in Chinese, Japanese, and English books, (2) collecting publications of renowned researchers or clinical workers in the field of adolescent psychology, (3) filling up any gaps of back issues in academic journals on topics related to adolescence, (4) checking from the publication list from well credited publishers, and (5) monitoring the most recent publications while this project is in progress. Our book search committee constitutes researchers and clinicians from a variety of professional fields that are related with research on and service for adolescents. This committee has already compiled a buying list of 3583 books published after the year of 1980. Along with the current collection of 3946 books in the NTU library and the RSS subscription system and inter-library book exchange agreement with 110 academic institutions in Taiwan, the NTU university library can provide a user-friendly resource for readers interested in issues related to adolescent psychology.
