Acupuncture anesthesia as an alternative method to conventional premedication in panendoscopy was investigated in two hundred outpatients who were divided into a conventional anesthesia group and an acupuncture anesthesia group by their own choice. Seventy- two pairs of patients were selected from these two groups of patients using the casecontrol matching method. The conventional group was premedicated with an intramuscular injection of 0.6 mg trospium chloride (an anticholinergic) and a local spray of 0.3 cc 8﹪ Xylocaine to the oropharynx. The acupuncture group was premedicated by needling the left Hogu and Neigun-Yaiguan points. All patients in both groups tolerated the endoscopy procedure and the efficacy of these two methods were analyzed. There were no statistical differences(p>0.05) in terms of the patients' discomfort, cooperation, gastric peristalsis during the procedure, the mean pulse rate before examination, and the patients' willingness to undergo another panendoscopy, between the two groups. Only belching during examination was noted to be more severe in the acupuncture group (p=0.022). Acceleration of pulse rate after examination was found to be more significant in the conventional group(p<0.001). Our study showed that acupuncture anesthesia was a safe and effective premedication method for panendoscopy and can be an alternative to conventional premedication especially for patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy or glaucoma which precluded the usage of anticholinergics and patients with a history of heart disease or an allergy to lidocaine.# C 2193132 |
