In addition to the steep slopes, abundant fault structures and frequent earthquakes cause ubiquitous slumps and slides on the continental slope. To provide a basis for the quantitative analysis of the slumping, laboratory tests were performed on undisturbed core samples from the Changyuan offshore area to examine their physical and geotechnical properties. The results of the analysis on 12 cores reveal that the slope sediments consist of normally consolidated to highly overconsolidated silt or clayey silt, with low water contents, low plasticities, and low compressibilities. The angle of internal friction measured by undrained direct shear testing is fCu = 25.5°, suggesting that the slopes in the region are stable under static conditions. The Cu/POvalues measured by miniature vane shear tests range from 0.4 to 0.6. A simple infinite slope stability analysis indicates that the slopes in the study area may become unstable during large‐magnitude earthquakes capable of generating ground accelerations exceeding 14% of gravity. © 1997, Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
