Pour-through (PT), a convenient and non-destructive method for medium solution testing, is widely used for bark-based and peat-based media but rarely performed for sphagnum moss medium. Due to the special characteristics of sphagnum moss, medium extraction methods need to be validated before use. This chapter provides validation for the use of the PT method in cultivating Phalaenopsis orchids using sphagnum moss substrate, and includes discussion of a standard PT procedure for sphagnum medium, as well as the practical aspects of its application in nurseries. Studies carried out by the authors demonstrated that different electrical conductivity (EC) values in the displacing solutions did not influence the EC or pH values of the leachate. In addition, PT extraction gave similar leachate EC values as compared with those obtained by the press extraction method. Therefore, PT can be successfully used for sphagnum moss. The use of a fertilizer solution as a displacing solution is recommended in nurseries, with 60 mL being ideal for a 10.5-cm pot and 40 mL for an 8.5-cm pot. For optimal growth of Phalaenopsis, leachate EC values of 0.6‒1.0 dSÂmâ’1 are suggested. Immediate leaching is recommended for tested EC values of > 1.5 dSÂmâ’1, while a higher fertilizer concentration should be given at the next application when the tested EC is < 0.6 dSÂmâ’1. It is hoped that the information presented in the chapter will be valuable to growers who cultivate Phalaenopsis and other orchids using sphagnum moss substrate, as well as to those researching orchid cultivation. © 2011 by World Scientific Publishing Co.
