High-rise buildings, especially skyscrapers, are the most conspicuous symbolic landscapes and even urban form for global cities. They function not just merely as expressive property commodities within global cities, but also as monumental structures in contemporary corporate cities. Therefore, the production and representation of a city’s high-rise buildings is one of the most significant research topics in current urban studies, especially after urban studies have been facing a phrase of “cultural turn”. This study aims at studying and comparing the characteristics of corporate landscapes of three Chinese global cities, which are Taipei, Hong Kong and Shanghai, by focusing on the production and representation of those cities’ high-rise buildings. Firstly, this study will document the composition of high-rise buildings for each city to see how they shape cityscape and urban form. Secondly, the study will analyze the production network of the high-rise buildings in each city to see how the production of high-rise building has become a global enterprise. Thirdly, it aims to examine the image-makers of those high-rise buildings and to see its effects on urban promotion. Finally, this research will investigate how the production of high-rise buildings and their representation are mediated through the interaction among sate, capital and citizen in each city and how are they become products of capital flows among different global cities. |
