The sources of SHS include exposure from relatives at home, work place, and in public. Experimental and epidemiologic studies have observed the intake and metabolism of SHS (National Research Council (U.S.). Part of the importance of SHS stems from the fact that the levels of some carcinogens, e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), benzo(a)pyrene (BP) and 4-aminobiphenyl (4-ABP, an arylamine), are actually higher in undiluted SHS than in mainstream smoke (i.e., active smoke) (National Research Council 1986). In addition, the size of the particles in SHS is smaller than those in mainstream smoke and, therefore, these particles are more likely to be deposited in the lung (Dockery and Trichopoulos 1997; Hecht 1999). The association between SHS and lung cancer or childhood asthma has been studied extensively. While it is well-recognized that 80-90% of all lung cancer is attributable to cigarette smoking, only 15% of all smokers develop this disease and about 10% of all diagnosed lung cancers are never smokers (Hammond and Seidman 1980). In summary, for different health effects, significant associations have been observed in genetic markers, including risk modification by germline polymorphisms, gene expression changes, and somatic alterations. Some gaps in our knowledge of SHS health effects remain. The associations between sequence variants of genes involved in phase I and II metabolism and cell cycle pathways and the risk of lung cancer have been widely explored for SHS exposure and conclusive findings are not yet available. ? 2011 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
