Research about toponym of Taiwan has been developed since theearly 20th century. Although a large number of studies have devoted to the linguisticand historical investigations of place names, these studies were usually based onarchives analysis and field investigations that limit the analysis to local contexts orselected examples. As such, this research intended to examine the spatial contexts ofplace names in Taiwan more properly and comprehensively with a different approach.Specifically, we made word frequency analysis of place names in the nationalgeographic names database and used GIS tools to examine the spatial patterns of aparticular type of place names.place namesplace namesWe found that most of logographic place names in Taiwan are natural geographicentities mainly such as? (pit or tunnel),? (mountain) and? (plain). Someplace names reflect how people use lands such as? (orchard),? (pond) and?(drainage). A typical place names in Taiwan is usually combined those characters witha prefix like? (big plain),? (new pond) or? (peach orchard). We alsofound that it is very rare to find the most common method of naming place names inother culture-use of names of prominent people. We hope this analysis can beextended to other countries using logographic writing system. ? 2018 Proceedings - 39th Asian Conference on Remote Sensing: Remote Sensing Enabling Prosperity, ACRS 2018.
