However, it is important to understand the attributes of healthy environments that can assist people in reducing mental fatigue. Therapeutic landscape design provides health benefits that have been demonstrated in many studies, but the research has been unable to translate those findings into practical designs. To fill the gap between scientific studies and practical designs, a new process called the evidence-based design procedure (EBDP) was created to help landscape architects design healthy landscapes. The aim of this research was to establish the design criteria from previous studies and theories, and to use the theories and landscape designs to provide evidence-based, healthier natural landscapes. The study created a design procedure to establish a design database and then used it to evaluate the proposed design projects. In the first stage, landscape photographs used in research articles related to landscape and human health were selected, and chosen for naturalness, preference, attention restoration, and emotion. Second, the photos and their standardized scores from the landscape protocols were used to create the design database. In the third stage, the designers selected the protocols that best described their design vision. The procedure’s final stage calculated the health effect scores from the designer-selected landscapes. The EBDP was tested in a participatory, healthy farm design workshop. The farm designers were asked to select 10 landscape photos of the desired environment using the landscape protocols. The scores corresponding to each photo were added to the total score to create the landscape health benefits score. The EBDP design process improved traditional design procedures by using new research results to assist landscape architects in designing therapeutic landscapes based on scientific evidence. ? 2021 International Society for Horticultural Science.
