It is possible to manipulate the microfluidic flow by carefully changing the balance among various participating forces including the Coriolis force, the centrifugal force and the capillary force. The Coriolis force is perpendicular to the tangential velocity, thus one can use slanted channels to change the flow direction. Changing disk spinning direction and velocity can change the balance between the capillary force and the centrifugal force. A multi-stage channel design was then implemented for a lab-on-a-disk biomedical diagnostic LAMP system. The lab-on-a-disk system consists of a servo system for centrifugal pumping and a heater for temperature control. To minimize the evaporative loss from the LAMP process, the system integrates the multistep reactor with heating capability to allow real-time LAMP execution. A polymer light emitting diode (PLED) section deposited on the disk then enables the turbidity test readout. |
