The scope of this project is to investigate the removal abilities of humic acid and arsenic by UF-chitosan process. Water quality parameters after the UF-chitosan process, such as fluorescence intensity, total organic carbon, concentration and membrane fouling are to be evaluated. In addition, gel filtration chromatography (GFC) will be used for mocular size fractionation of humic substances. The fractions will be subjected to the UF process, and the mechanism of the chelating reation in humic acid arsenic is to be investigated. After the pretreatment of adsorbent #6 ,adsorbent #5, adsorbent CB and adsorbent CP, the fact indicated that the preadsorption caused severe permeate flux decline and membrane fouling was not improved significantly with the chitosan in chitosan-UF operation. But the removal ability of TOC and arsenic is effective. By employing GFC method, humic acid was fractionated into five groups corresponding to the molecular weight ranges: >35000 Da, 20000-35000 Da, 6000- 20000 Da, 1500-6000 Da and <1500 Da. The results showed that adding arsenic into the humic acid solution would quench the relative fluorescence intensity by accelerating both the rate of intersystem crossing and nonradiative process. The relative fluorescence intensity was strongly quenched by arsenic in the molecular weight range of >35000 Da. |
