Publication N-phenacylthiazolium bromide inhibits the advanced glycation end product (AGE)-age receptor axis to modulate experimental periodontitis in ratsBackground: Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are involved in the inflammatory process and are considered to be etiologic factors of diabetic periodontitis. The purpose of this study is to investigate the capability of Nphenacylthiazolium bromide (PTB), a glycated cross-link breaker, in the modulation of periodontitis in various disease phases. Methods: Mitogenesis and cytotoxicity of human periodontal ligament cells (hPDLCs) undergoing PTB treatment were evaluated in vitro. In vivo biomodulation was investigated by systemically administering PTB in the induction, progression, and recovery phases of ligature-induced periodontitis in rats, with the results evaluated by microcomputed tomography, histology, immunohistochemistry of the AGE and AGE receptor (RAGE), and gene expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), RAGE, periostin, fibronectin, and type I collagen. Results: Significantly promoted mitogenesis and reduced cytotoxicity of hPDLCs were noted with 0.05 to 0.1 mM PTB treatment at 24 hours. Systemic PTB administration significantly reduced periodontal bone loss, AGE deposition, and expressions of TNF-α and RAGE but elevated the periostin level in all three phases of periodontitis. Conclusion: PTB inhibits the induction and progression of periodontitis and facilitates its recovery via improving cellular viability and inhibiting the AGE-RAGE axis.journal articleScopus© Citations 29 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Quality of life of spinal cord injured patients in Taiwan: A subgroup study(Nature Publishing Group, 1997); ;Chuang C.-C. ;Kao M.-J.; ; Lin K.-H.;Chuang C.-C.;Kao M.-J.;Lien I.-N.;Jau-Yih TsauoThe major purposes of this study were to assess the quality of life (QOL) of spinal cord injured patients, and to assess the possible factors affecting the QOL. The survey was conducted from 1992-1993 by mailed questionnaires to members of Spinal Cord Injury Association of the Republic of China. There were 347 quality responses with the mean age of 37.5 ± 10.2 years old and the mean duration of illness of 7.8 ± 6.8 years. The questionnaire included five domains, physical mobility, environment-transportation, psychosocial adjustment, education, and economics for a total of 39 items. Each item contained a rating of 'importance' and 'satisfaction'. The quality of life index (QLI) was calculated by multiplying the satisfaction score with the importance score, then dividing by the possible highest score. The major results included: (1) the subjects had mild to moderate dissatisfaction with most items in five domains except psychosocial adjustment; (2) quality of life in those with complete tetraplegia (QLI = -0.41) and incomplete tetraplegia (QLI = -0.31) was significantly lower than that of those with complete paraplegia (QLI = -0.13) and incomplete paraplegia (QLI = -0.04); (3) both the severity of injury, and the post-injury working status were the major factors affecting the life quality of spinal cord injured patients in Taiwan.journal articleScopus© Citations 36 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
