Abstract
Abstract: Department of Anthropology holds large collections of both ethnological and archaeological artifacts. These collections have begun since this department was established in 1928. Collection of archaeological artifacts continues up to present as our professors and graduate students conduct excavations for their researches. As Taiwan as well as the world become highly interested in cultural resources, we feel necessary to respond to changes in larger society. Currently, we offer courses on museum studies and material culture, but we welcome more support from our faculty and encourage more become engaged in studies of our collections or material culture in general. This ‘Anthropological Collections and University (2)’is in its second year of a three-year research project. This collective project will stimulate academic exchanges regarding our collections and issues resulting from them among participating colleagues. This project will also facilitate the relocation of our collections from their present location to former university library currently under remodeling. Relocation of collections poses a tremendous management challenge.
Our three-year research project focusing on ‘anthropological collections and university’ intends to cover the following: History of university museums, comparative studies of world university anthropological museums, construction of museum ethnography, anthropological knowledge construction at university and community museums, context and meaning of artifact relation, university collection and indigenous subjectivity, archaeology and museum education, and museum ethics. In year 2009, three of our colleagues are participating this project, they are Dr. Yuan-chao Tung, The other side of Ethnological collection: Displaced Persons and Misplaced Objects; Dr. Chia-yu Hu, A Comparative Study of Ethnological Collections and University Museums (2);Dr. Pochan Chen, Archaeology and Community.
Near the end of 2009, this department will co-organize a workshop with two public education oriented museums, Taiwan Museum and National Museum of Prehistory. Each will provide two to three papers to exchanges our thoughts. Our three colleagues who take part in this research project will present their results at this workshop. Our department will organize an international symposium to mark the 60th year since our inception. Research results from this three-year project will be presented at this conference.
As for practical issues concerning relocation of collections, two full-time assistants who are responsible for ethnological and archaeological collections respectively, will record processes of relocation, problems and solutions etc. They will prepare to present papers on technical part of relocation at relevant workshops or symposium.
