Abstract
摘要:語言方向(Directionality)是翻譯學研究中的重要議題,有關語言方向對同步口譯員影響的實證研究,近年已逐漸增多,然而多數研究仍僅限於以學生為對象,或僅止於觀察專業口譯員在實驗中的表現,對於專業口譯員在實際會議口譯行為的研究,目前仍是鳳毛麟角,其中以中文與英文為語言組合的研究,更是付之闕如。
本計畫旨在探討台灣的專業中英口譯員在實際會議口譯場合,因應不同語言方向(A至B語言、B至A語言)的同步口譯所採取口譯策略的異同。申請人擬以質性研究方式,至三組專業口譯員(共六人)實際的同步口譯工作現場進行觀察與錄音,並於會後針對個別口譯員進行訪談,以觀察結果、錄音分析、與訪談內容互相佐證,並以申請人先前針對中英專業口譯員的實驗研究結果所建立之「口譯策略使用模型」(Chang, 2005)做為分析架構,探討口譯員因應不同語言方向所進行的策略調整,並進一步釐清口譯員個人特質(personal factors)、口譯行業規範(norms)、與口譯工作外在因素(contextual factors)等三大因素對同步口譯員策略使用的影響。

Abstract: The debate on directionality has been going on for almost three decades and has remained one of the most contentious issues in the literature on conference interpretation. Proponents of B-to-A interpreting assert that interpreters are at a disadvantage cognitively when interpreting from the A language into the B language due to the extra effort required to find corresponding expressions in their B language. Supporters of A-to-B interpreting, on the other hand, contend that interpreters’ better comprehension of their native language may help them produce a more complete and reliable interpretation. Despite the recent surge of interests in providing more empirical evidence on the differences between interpreting in different directions, so far most studies have only focused either on student subjects or on professional interpreters performing under experimental settings, making it difficult to extrapolate the results to professional interpreters working in real conference settings.
The proposed study aims to fill this gap by describing and analyzing the impact of interpreting directions on professional Chinese-English interpreters’ strategy use in real simultaneous-interpreting-mediated events. The applicant will observe and record the interpreting of three teams of professional Chinese-English interpreters (6 interpreters in total) in three real conferences. Selected segments from the three conferences will then be used as stimulus in the retrospective interviews which will be conducted with each interpreter after the conferences. The collected data will be analyzed in two stages. The first stage of the analysis focuses on categorizing the strategies interpreters used in each segment, which will be based both on the interpreting data and the transcripts of interpreters’ stimulated retrospection protocols. The focus of the second stage of the analysis is to build a model based on the data emerged from the first stage of analysis and compare the model with the preliminary model on simultaneous interpreting process constructed in Chang (2005) based on data collected from professional Chinese-English interpreters under experimental settings. This analysis will further clarify the impact of the dynamic interaction among interpreters’ personal qualities, interpreting norms, and other contextual factors on interpreters’ strategy use during simultaneous interpreting in different directions.
By investigating how professional Chinese/English conference interpreters cope with the demands of working into both their mother tongue and the acquired language in the real conference settings, this study will not only sheds light on the possible differences in strategy use between interpreters working with different language directions, but also help the design of more effective interpreting pedagogy.
