Description

Abstract
Abstract: Global climate change has known to cause biological and environmental imbalances, such as species migration, phenological shift, changes in ecosystem equilibrium, and incidence of extreme weather. Such alterations can make many rare and vulnerable species facing severe pressure of population isolation and habitat reduction. In this project, we incorporate various sources of databases on plant species distribution, as well as genetic diversity in selected species, to evaluate impacts of climate change on biodiversity in Taiwan based on the guidelines provided by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development (UNCSD). We will examine the distribution patterns of vascular plants. We also selected Fagus hayatae and Abies kawakamii, representing mid and high altitude species, for comparison of genetic diversity between large and isolated (relic) populations. The results will be compared with predictions from global warming, population dynamics, and habitat fragmentation, and their influences on biodiversity.
