Abstract
Abstract: One of the major purposes of tourism development in a destination is to improve
residents’ quality of life (QOL). Indeed, residents’ community QOL could be influenced by
tourism development (i.e. tourism-related community QOL, TCQOL) in a host destination.
The positive tourism impacts directly or indirectly benefit resident community QOL. On the
other hand, tourism development also produces a variety of negative impacts may harm local
community QOL. Positive and negative tourism impacts have been well studied in literature,
and conceptual frameworks and theories are proposed to explain the relationships between
resident attitudes toward tourism development and their support for tourism development.
While implicit in this research theme discusses that tourism development influences QOL in a
host community, few studies have directly investigated residents’ perceptions of the impact
tourism has on their QOL, and relationships between community QOL perceptions and
support for tourism in the community. Recently, evidence emerged in the literature that
tourism impacts influence residents’ satisfaction within the community, which may directly
contribute to residents’ support/opposition for tourism development. Researchers agree that
tourism impact studies to date have mainly been focused on how tourism is perceived to
impact the communities rather than its impact on community QOL. A potential problem,
subsequently, is that the effect of residents’ perceived tourism impacts on their
support/opposition for tourism development maybe misapprehended if the perceived impacts
on their community QOL is not considered. Additionally, the myriad tourism impacts vary
across tourism development stage that implies resident perceptions of tourism impacts and
community QOL may be different from tourism development stage to stage. To address these
issues above, this study mainly aims to (1) examine a proposed structural model which
illustrates TCQOL in the relationship of residents’ perceptions of tourism impacts and their
support/opposition for tourism development; and (2) investigate resident perceptions of
tourism impacts, TCQOL, and support for tourism development across tourism development
stages.
The research procedure includes three phases. The first phase is to select four types of
development stage (i.e. beginning, growth, maturity and decline) from Taiwan major tourism
destinations by using secondary indicators. The second phase is a qualitative study process
which investigates stakeholders’ opinions of tourism impacts and TCQOL from the selected
destinations. Incorporating the qualitative analysis with literature of tourism impacts and
TCQOL, the survey questionnaire therefore has been produced and pretested. In the third
phase, the questionnaire is deployed to the selected tourism destinations that examine the
proposed structural model and test hypotheses.
This study mainly contributes to theoretical advancement in the field of resident attitudes
studies. Specifically, it adds to existing social exchange theory (SET) by introducing TCQOL
factor to explain its influence on resident support for tourism development. In addition, the
comparison of the proposed model across development stages contributes to concept of
destination life cycle in connecting tourism development stages, tourism impacts and
TCQOL.
