Abstract: The performance of academic internationalization achieved by College of Engineering has acquainted as excellent for the past years. It includes the areas of promoting English-taught courses, enhancing international collaboration, developing international dual-degree programs, attending international conferences, and participating in international competitions.
Starting from 2009, Department of Civil Engineering and Institute of Applied Mechanics have established engineering graduate programs in English. Overall, the numbers of English taught courses has reached almost 100 every semester, growing steady. Students who participated in international competitions had outstanding performance. Beside the existing agreements, College of Engineering has signed exchange student agreements with 18 famous international universities in recent 3 years which provides more than 100 opportunities for students to study abroad for one semester. Financial support of life expense and plane tickets is provided to outgoing exchange students every year, and a recruitment meeting is arranged twice a year.
In addition, College of Engineering also promotes the international dual degree programs; so far more than 10 students have received dual doctoral degrees from both NTU and one of the following Universities: Université Joseph Fourier-Grenoble 1, Université Montpellier II, and Ecole Normale Superieure de Cachan, France. And over 10 students are also studying for dual master degree form Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and Waseda University, Japan. In the mean time, College of Engineering sends students to University of South Carolina, USA, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, and University of Malaya, Malaysia for summer programs; through the programs, students can not only earn the credits but also broaden their horizons. The participation of international activities is also well activated in College of Engineering. There were totally 636 faculties and 42 doctoral students attending international conferences, and hosting 35 international conferences in 2010. In 2009, College of Engineering hosted the AOTULE (Asia-Oceania Top University League on Engineering) Meeting, and Dean Keh had been the Executive Chair from December, 2009 to November, 2010; the active participation and devoted enthusiasm is highly appreciated by all the AOTULE members.
To achieve the goal of “1/3 NTU undergraduate students study abroad”, College of Engineering plans to work on the following task forces: (1) encourage students to participate in exchange student programs (2) promote summer programs (3) establish college-level agreements with renowned international universities (4) promote overseas internship opportunities. It is anticipated that the slots of study abroad opportunity will increase 20%~25% annually, hoping to triple the numbers in 3 years and reach the goal of “1/3 NTU undergraduate students study abroad”
