Taking WHAM-BioS, which is an acronym of Wireless Health Advanced Monitoring Bio-Diagnosis System, as the platform to pursue cross-disciplinary technologies that can foster fundamental know-how for industries such as precision instrument, medical diagnosis, power supply, etc. Two goals were set for the project. One is to foster new industries and to improve value-add of our industries and the other is to make sure fundamental technologies were generated so as to position the whole team at the top of the knowledge supply chain. It is to be noted that these two goals match perfectly with the mottos established by the team since nine years ago, i.e., “Be Vital To Taiwan” and “Be Famous for Science and Technology.”
With long-term home care as the primary target, the full project was developed to perform real-time C-Reaction Protein detection in blood serum. Using a miniature RF system, which can then be linked into the GSM/GPRS network for bio-informatics analysis, will then transmit the data obtained forward. All systems are to be powered by a miniature power supply with biocompatible packaging that can harvest electric power from vibration induced by the patient’s body. Related simulation techniques, processing technologies, experimental verifications, design know-how, and prototypes are to be developed in a coherent and systematic way.
Research center and team members
There are well over 100 members within the team with a healthy mix of faculties, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The majority of the faculty members have been worked together for many important projects including more than 4 major National Science Council University-Industry Collaboration projects for the last 9 years. Coupled these facts with NTU NEMS Center, which was grown out of the NSC Northern Regional MEMS Center, most of the facilities have been established within the center and within the many laboratories set up by the team.
Patents, not only for the full system but also for all the sub-systems, will certainly be a key factor of this proposal. However, it is the fundamental patent and not a set of simple utility patents will be the target of this proposal. With such a strong cross-disciplinary requirement, which includes biochips, nano/micro -electro-mechanical systems (N/MEMS), nanotechnology, wireless system, and miniature power systems, etc., many know-how and interface knowledge will be generated and co-developed with all sectors of the knowledge supply chain.
