Abstract: In this 3-year plan, we plan to convert the frontier astronomical discoveries that can be acquired only by research organizations via international contact, to teaching aid material for elementary schools. This effort would then allow the elementary school children to expose to the advanced knowledge at an earlier stage. If this long-term plan can be carried out, we can bring up the scientific knowledge of all the citizens from their young ages, and allow the establishment of correct point of view of the cosmos for young children, who can the understand the scientific process of “observation – exploration – analysis – cognition"and learn how to perform scientific analysis with logic thinking.
There are two components in this proposal: the first part is the development of“Teaching Aid Material", which contains the most advanced progresses in astronomy in the past 20 years, in the form of PPT files (including text, animation, and archive films). The second part contains the training of “The Galaxy Ambassador" which actually is faculty development of selected elementary science teachers. This project will help teachers become familiar with the teaching aid material and allow the teachers to further serve the role of visiting lecturers in other elementary schools.
We expect that, in 3 years, the first part of this program will create 36 sets of theme-based teaching material, each of 30 minute length, centered on one major celestial object or phenomenon. Each set can be further divided into 3 parts of 10 minute length. This way the teacher can use the material in 10, 20, or 30 minute length at his/her own discretion. The content of each set will base on the latest progresses of the space-advanced countries, bringing in the history and animation description of the key discoveries, so that the overall content is scientific, knowledge abundant, future-oriented, and fun. As to the second part, we anticipate to train 20 elementary school science teachers each year in the next 3 years. The training program is consisted of 6 sessions in one year, for the 12 sets of teaching material. The teachers will learn how to teach the materials in rehearsal sessions. After the completion of the 6 training sessions, the teacher will be given the honorary title of “The Galactic Ambassador", which will not only allow them to offer special course in their own school, but also give them the privilege to serve the role of visiting lecturers for the other elementary schools. This teacher development program will be complementary to the development of teaching material. Combining the two efforts, we expect to see a comprehensive improvement in the science teaching in the elementary schools.
