摘要：台灣的弧陸碰撞造山作用是世界上少有的研究活躍年輕造山運動的理想天然實驗室，而台灣南部海域從南到北則顯現出從板塊隱沒到進入弧陸碰撞的過渡帶構造。整個台灣南部海域呈現了從板塊隱沒到造山過程中的種種構造與沉積紀錄。我們因而提出一些海洋鑽探研究理想的井位，以期利用2003年開始的國際整合海洋鑽探計畫(Integrated Ocean Drilling Program﹐簡稱IODP)之鑽井船前來鑽探取樣，以提供了解從弧陸碰撞作，用孕震構造演化到台灣西南的天然氣水合物特性等數個研究題目的重要資料。
Abstract: This proposal requests the funding of a two-year research project to investigate the arc-continent collision zone and seismogenic structures offshore southern Taiwan. The active arc-continent collision in Taiwan provides a unique opportunity to observe different stages of the mountain building processes: from intra-oceanic subduction north of Luzon, to incipient arc-continent collision south of Taiwan, to active mountain building in the central part of Taiwan, to post-collision collapse in northeastern Taiwan and the Southern Okinawa Trough. The area off southern Taiwan preserves various structural features and sedimentary records of a transition zone from subduction to collision, thus becomes an idea place for ocean drilling research. As the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program will phase in starting late 2003, proposals to address the arc-collision problem in Taiwan and the seismogenic structures are ready to be submitted to the IODP for drilling research in the near future. This proposal will carry out marine geophysical and geological site surveys for the proposed sites in the IODP drilling proposals under preparation. During the next two years, we intend to: 1. Compile and analysis all the marine geophysical and geological data in the area off southern Taiwan, reprocess some key multi-channel seismic profiles that pass the proposed drilling sites in order to obtain clear images of the drilling targets and accurate velocity structures. 2. Collect new multi-channel seismic data and sea floor sediment core samples to fulfill the requirements of the IODP Site Survey Panel, also to better define the objectives of the proposed drilling research.
This proposal also serves as one of the projects in the Taiwan-French collaborative research program on “Active orogenic deformation and natural hazard mitigation: Taiwan”. The French colleagues will participate in the IODP drilling proposal preparation, also will complete the compilation of the “Neotectonic Map Onshore and Offshore Taiwan”, a Taiwan-French cooperation product, and put the digitized information in a geographic information system for data preservation and convenient ultilization.
