International Growth and Worldwide Collaboration
-- Globalizing Medical Education and Sciences
The Office of International Affairs (OIA) was established as the current office in 1997. The office aims to serve as the window and information hub for National Taiwan University College of Medicine (NTUCM) faculty and students to collaborate with their education and research partners around the world by enabling exchange activities and reducing barriers. The OIA has developed a range of mechanisms to fit a variety of interactions and works with overseas institutions to build partnerships from initiative contact and administer the establishment of agreements for large collaborative programs. The office also takes a creative approach, fitting mechanisms according to the type of activity being developed and the needs of the partners involved. Since the first foreign collaborative agreement was signed with Harvard Medical School in 1988, the number of the NTUCM collaborative schools abroad has increased to 59 by 2015.
The OIA has developed several international strategies in response to the rapidly increasing globalization of education and research. These include (1) memorandums of understanding (MOU) for exchanges of staffs, faculties and students in both basic and clinical sides, (2) the establishment of joint- and/or dual-degree education programs, (3) the creation of international research collaborations, (4) the promotion of and participation in joint educational and research meetings, and (5) the formation of liaisons with biomedical agencies overseas. Through these collaborative agreements, over 200 undergraduate and graduate students fulfill their elective trainings abroad, visit medical facilities and institutions overseas and attend international conferences each year. In addition, hundreds of students from medical schools worldwide also visit our hospital to complete their clinical education every year.
