Biography
Having obtained her DPhil in French from the University of Oxford, Michelle is Assistant Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at National Taiwan University. Her DPhil dissertation investigated sex, gender, and identity in turn-of-the-century French literature on China, and her articles have examined the works of Judith Gautier, Pierre Loti, and the Chinese diplomat Chen Jitong in relation to transcultural representation in nineteenth-century French literature. Her current project turns to the poetics of space in the poetry of François Cheng, exploring landscape and intertextuality—with particular attention to Cheng’s dialogue with Victor Segalen and resonances with the Italian lyric tradition and post-Petrarchanism. Across both projects, her work attends to the transcultural openings in Sino-French literary exchange, probing what lies beyond the boundaries of national and linguistic categories.
