Abstract
本論文對荊江、洞庭湖區圍湖造田的歷史作了長時期的考察，認為兩湖地區的圍湖造田運動是個長時期的現象，如同波浪一般從宋朝一直延續至今，從江漢平原一直蔓延到洞庭湖平原，而分別在明、清、中共時期躍遷更高的程度，一部兩湖地區的開發史就是一部圍湖造田的歷史，「湖廣熟、天下足」以及「魚米之鄉」的稱號是以環境為代價換來的。「圍湖造田」、「向湖要糧」並不是中華人民共和國成立之後才有的新事物。圍湖造田、向湖要糧也不是中國的專利，荷蘭的圩田開發也跟兩湖地區圍湖造田運動一樣，都是以堅苦卓絕的精神向水要地，只是兩湖地區的開發為時更久，所跨的地域也更大。
