Abstract
Japan had been importing various institutions following Western models since the Meiji Restoration of 1868. However, during the process of industrialization and capitalization, Japan had met serious social and urban problems just as western countries had. It major introduced the cases of "industrial village" and "garden city" effected by the Occident socialistic planning idea in Japan before World War II, including their background and taking a historical view of them. Besides to be concerned with the historical context of prewar Japan, it has care for the issues of living environment and planning from a critical point. However, it would be revelatory for the local study of the history of Urban planning in our country.
