Abstract
The commonly made assumption that the distribution of current along a dipole antenna is sinusoidal is examin ed critically together with the associated di stribution of charge and the electromagnetic fi eld. Measured distribution s of c urre nt and charge are compared with those assumed in the sinusoidal th eory. It is shown that th e di stribution s of c harge diffe r so greatly that it must be concluded that the electric fi eld near and along the s urface of th e actual antenna is not well a pproximated by the near fi eld obtained with the s inuso idal assumption.
