Abstract
The Habitats of wildlife are heterogeneous, and populations are usually partitioned into
subpopulations. Limited gene flow among subpopulations results in genetic drift, and the
population become structured. The formation of social groups further constrains random
mating within subpopulations, and subpopulations may become structured, too.
Therefore, to understand population genetic structure, one needs to consider genetic
variations at four levels: individuals, social groups, subpopulations, and populations. The
proposed project will use the harvest mice (Micromys minutus) as a model species. We
will measure spatial distribution of subpopulations, and identify social group members
through trapping. We will measure genetic diversity at the four level of organization
through the development of microsatellite markers. The purpose of the study will serve
as a foundation that aim to resolve the relationships among the four organization levels of a
population.
