Abstract
This paper is about the phenomenon of Chinese black-heart-products in Taiwan. My thesis was inspired by Mary Douglas'' cultural analysis approach. Through interviewing several institutions and discourse analysis of media texts, I found that this phenomenon is not only an issue of consumer safety or quality regulation of products but also an issue infected by many political and economic factors. hrough analysis of media texts, I found that the phenomenon of Chinese black-heart-products was first a Chinese social phenomenon which had no relation with Taiwan. However, when these products came into Taiwan gradually, it was becoming a social problem in Taiwan, too. Moreover, because Chinese products were recalled in several Western countries in 2007, the black-heart image of Chinese products was strengthened. also found that this phenomenon was co-constructed by many institutions in Taiwan. Those institutions defined the phenomenon of Chinese black-heart-products as an issue of consumer safety or quality control problems originally. Afterward they switched their focus on the distinction of the places of production and the meaning of the distinction. They also linked this issue to the protection of the local industries at the same time.dditionally, this paper analyzed cases of tiles and towels. I found that when local industries were impacted by Chinese products, they often lobbied government to alter enactments of product label, so that consumers can distinguish the places of production more easily. Meanwhile, they advanced discourses or cited risk cases to create the value associated with the distinction of the places of production, and hence guided customers to choose products according to the place rather than the quality.
