Abstract
This report is a complete report of three year’s project. It is a history of Catholic mission of modern Taiwan, covering from 1859, when the Roman Catholic Church reentered Taiwan, up to 1965, one of the climax of the missionary effort under the Nationalist rule. This report is conveniently divided into three parts: The first stage, from 1869 to 1895 when the Japanese took over the whole island, the Catholic Church took root and began to spread in this immigrant society. In this report, the background, development and its social relationship of missionary endeavour is discussed. In addition, the pattern and the causes of conflicts between the Catholics and the local people were explored and analyzed. In the end, the characteristic-features and its limitations of this reentrance period of the missionary efforts were summarized. The second stage, from the beginning of Japanese Colonial Government in 1895 to the retrocession of Taiwan into the Nationalist Chinese Government in 1945, the spread of the Catholic faith in Taiwan under the Japanese rule is discussed and reported. How the Church in Taiwan, in response to the change of environment, changed its missionary policies is also explored and analyzed. The features and limitations of these policies are also summarized at the end. The third stage lasted from 1945 to 1965 when the numbers of converts reached its high point. After the Second World War, the Chinese Nationalist Government started to rule Taiwan and later moved to this island. Most clergymen were expelled and many went to Taiwan for refuge. Taiwan after 1950 had unprecedented number of religious persons coming over and the Church was greatly affected positively, or maybe also negatively. These developments before and after the dividing 1950 are explored and discussed in this report. The reasons behind so many new converts in this stage was also analyzed. Last but not least, the general overview is offered.
