Abstract
Visual deprivation myopia was suggested to be controlled by the local retina factor. We ought to explore which part of the retina, either macula or peripheral retina or optic nerve, is the critical area for visual deprivation myopia. Three 3-month-old baby moneys were studied. Laser photocoagulation was applied to the posterior pole of the retina on right eye, the left eye leaves without treatment. The first mondev was treated on macular area (MA) and the second one was treated on optic nerve (ON), the third one was treated of whole retina except macular area (PRP). Another 4 monkeys leave for controls in which they did not recrive any laser treatment. The refractive stauts and ocular dimensions were measured on each year. Results. After 3 years, the meam refractive error of 4 control monkeys was +0.88D. The MA monkey showed myopia -2.0D on the right expreimental eye and myopia -1.13D on the left control eye. The ON monkey showed moderate hyperopia on both eyes, +2.75D on the experimental eye and +3.0D on the control fellow eye . The PRP monkey showed slight hyperopia +0.63D on the right experimental eye and -0.63D on the left control eye. Conclusions. These results suggested that deprivation of the whole retina except macula inhibit ocular growth and produce similar refractaive status as the control group. In contrast, deprivation of macular area during the age of visual development may producc slight myopia in monkey. Thus , retina may play some role in the development of myopia, but further study is nedessary to clarify the role of macula in the development of refractive status in monkeys.#0534#
