Abstract
A building’s digital twin (DT) system integrates the virtual and physical environments by emphasizing the mutual data flow. DT technology can improve building operations’ performance, including space utilization improvement, energy consumption reduction, etc. However, current users of building’s DTs are mainly building owners and facility managers. Even though building occupants are the key users of the buildings, their interactions with buildings’ DTs are limited. Exploring human-DT interactions can refine current buildings’ DT developments. This paper conducts a bibliometric and content analysis to review emerging approaches that facilitate human-DT interactions, the challenges encountered, and the related research trends. It focuses on the types and methods of data collection and delivery considerations of human centricity in DT systems. The review results from 43 papers show that (1) the major research areas encompass technological aspects (e.g., BIM and IoT) and user-centered design elements (user interfaces and user experiences); (2) commonly used technologies such as environmental monitoring sensors, smartwatches, visualization interfaces, and XR tools are identified; (3) the design objective of a human-centered DT system is to enable intuitive, natural, and dynamic interactions for complex information exchange to users. This review contributes to identifying DT development gaps and future research directions.
