Abstract
Chestnut tiger butterfly(Parantica sita niphonica Moore)population dynamic was studied by using mark-release-recapture method of Yangmingshan national park, Datun mountain. The results from 2000 to 2008 indicated that the estimated chestnut tiger butterfly population size ranged from 418 to 165322. Thus the population size of the butterfly varied diffentially year by year. However, there seems to be a tendency for the population size of chestnut tiger butterfly to undergo a 3-4 year cycle. According to the records of recapture in different sites, distances and areas, chestnut tiger butterfly may have seasonal and directional movement. The short distance movements, on the other hand, had no specific orientation. The chestnut tiger butterfly may employ various strategy to overwinter. The chestnut tiger butterfly did not gather in the winter, and all stages of larvae and adult could be found in many areas.
