Abstract
“An Assessment System for Sustainable Taiwan” is a policy-oriented research
under ‘Strategies and Visions for Sustainable Taiwan” sponsored by the National
Science Council, aimed at establishing an assessment system for Taiwan’s
sustainability in natural, socio-economical and institutional aspects in order to provide
warning, review and guidance functions to national development policies.
This research employs institutional capacity-building as a key concept in
incorporating sustainability though intergenerational justice, carrying capacity, and
economic interneralization are also taken into account. In developing Taiwan’s
version of sustainable development indicators, this research employs the PSR system
and takes reference to competing indicators systems and Taiwan island status and
other salient features.
This research has completed a draft version of Taiwan’s sustainable
development indicators. Further work includes necessary revisions, comparative
weighting among indicators and institutional design for an interpretation and analysis
system.
