Abstract
The effects of globalization have long been dealt with in terms of economic and
technological consequences, but what about the influence on both education and professional
practice of landscape architecture? Besides, the specific historical social context of landscape
professional practice in Taiwan also makes the disciplinary character of landscape architecture
confront a fatal challenge today.
This article reviews and analyzes the developmental process of landscape architecture
education and professional practice in Taiwan, which can be separated into four phases --- “the
integral development of agriculture and landscape gardening (1951~1980)”,”the association of
landscape architecture program with rapid economic growth and urbanization(1981~1990)”,” a
diversity of landscape architecture programs and professional practices affiliated with urban
emphasis and environmental quality (1991~2002)”,” current landscape architecture education
and professional practice in transition by globalization impacts(since 2003)”.
The structural predicament of landscape professional practice in Taiwan is that the power
of market spread into the campus. It changes the ecology of university and quality of education.
It also makes the unbalance between practice and education of landscape architecture.
Meanwhile, The research integrate experience of literature and researcher for recognizing the
key problems of landscape architecture education. There are the position of department, the
interaction of social, basic training, the disconnection between college and practice, license
institute, international cooperation and viewing. Beside, researcher designs a questionnaire for
investigating the evaluation and suggestion of the quality of landscape architecture education by
the students who graduated from the college. The content of questionnaire survey the quality of
education and check the problem of connecting with practice. The questionnaire survey hope to
diagnose the landscape architecture professional education in Taiwan by the polyhedral way.
Facing the impact of globalization wave, the move up strategy of landscape architecture
professional education including: rethinking the qualifications of teachers, matching of license
institute and college program, enhance the course by international and cross culture interaction.
Meanwhile, in the coming years, landscape architecture has an obligation and an opportunity to
become more involved with the quality of environment and human life. To do so will require a
diversity of perception and skills. Landscape architecture education and professional practice
should develop a common ground that both academy and professional community can share.
That is using the digital technology to build a kind of knowledge-based network which can
improve interaction and accumulate of knowledge, experience and sentiment.
