Abstract
In this thesis we use panel spatial models to analyze the sources of economic growth in 21of Guangdong’s counties during the period 2000-2006. We found that the growth rate of per capita GDP is positively related to education, FDI, urbanization, and negatively related to the numbers of employees in state enterprises. The growth rate of per capita GDP is also positively related to spatial variables, which indicates the existence of spatial agglomeration in Guangdong. Once we take spatial and time heterogeneity into account, the spatial error model performs better than the spatial lag model. Finally, this study documents the existence of a conditional convergence in Guangdong.
