This thesis aims to explore the China Studies of Australian scholar David S. G. Goodman. Through studying Goodman’s China study, there are three main topics: research of Deng Xiaoping’s life, research about the opening reform policy of Communist Party of China, and the “Provincial China” study. Goodman’s research of Deng and opening reform policy emphasize on historical continuity, avoid simplification and fragmentation. The “Provincial China” study focus on China’s province, and using the approach of field survey to see the diversity of China. What the author found was that Goodman’s China study place importance on the diversity and locality of China. By accumulating the result of research, the scale of research keeps on moving to more local level. Topics of research change from elites of the center to local areas, and change from China''s political economic and social changes to historical and cultural identity.
