Abstract
This project is concerning the
development of a orthosis for the disabled. In
this project, we focused on designing ankle
mechanisms which were incorporated into
ankle-foot orthoses to assist the stroke patients.
It has been suggested that weight-bearing be
helpful in normalizing tone and maintaining the
joint range of motion as soon as the patient is
medically stable. Our research first studied the
dynamic behavior of the ankle and characterized
the normal gait. The ankle mechanisms then
were designed to fulfill the requirement of the
ankle joint moment during the gait cycle. A
prototype of the ankle mechanism was fabricated
and a preliminary efficacy test was carried out.
The mechanical structure design, biomechanical
calculations, and ergonomic considerations were
included. A clinical investigation and
biomechanical evaluation were performed.
