The Extraordinary Transmission through a Metal Film Perforated with Cross Shaped Hole Arrays and the Characteristics of Infrared Thermal Emitter

Abstract
The band diagram of surface plasmons (SPs) on a periodic array of metal holes is investigated in theory and experiment. The extraordinary transmission through a silver film perforated with various sized cross shaped hole arrays in a square lattice is measured by polarized infrared light to observe the influence of localized charge oscillations around the hole. The comparison of transmission spectra of periodic hole arrays with different hole shape is also discussed. Besides, the emission spectra and energy dispersions of infrared plasmonic thermal emitters with different intermediate SiO2 thickness are measured to investigate the coupling of SPs between the top and bottom Ag/SiO2 interface and the coupling length is determined. This coupling effect results in the red shift of emission peak of thermal emitter. Furthermore, the plasmonic thermal emitters with different top and bottom periodic hole structures are fabricated and the emission spectra are measured as well. With appropriate top and bottom periodic hole structures arrangement, the emission peaks from SPs resonance in the bottom periodic structure are observed simultaneously.
