Abstract
In semiconductor industry, the technology driver has always been pursuing smaller devices that predicted by Moore’s law. However, as the Moore’s law approaching its silicon limit, semiconductor manufacturers such as foundries need to find the next source for future revenue growth. Related diversification is one corporate strategy that a company can adopt. In this thesis, the related diversification strategy on “More than Moore’s (MtM) technology” of a semiconductor foundry is analyzed. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is the case study company in this thesis. First, this thesis aims to analyze TSMC’s strengths and weakness in the more than Moore’s industry. Second, TSMC’s current strategy on related diversification is analyzed. Third, key factors for TSMC to succeed in the more than Moore’s industry are identified. Finally, strategic suggestions on how TSMC could sustain its competitive advantages in more than Moore’s industry are given.
