Abstract
Both nickel-indiffused (NI) and magnesium-oxide-induced lithium outdiffusion (MILO) optical waveguides on Z-cut lithium niobate at blue laser wavelength (473nm) are successfully fabricated for the first time. Experimental results show that the diffusion time is shorter than that of the conventional titanium-indiffused (TI) waveguide, and no extra suppression of unwanted lithium outdiffusion is required. By trial-and-error, the width of single-mode NI waveguide is found 1.6um for the ordinary polarization and becomes 1.3um for extraordinary one, which are narrower than that of the TI waveguide. However, the width of single-mode MILO waveguide is 4um, which is wider than that of the TI waveguide.
Moreover, the photorefractive effects of straight waveguides are measured, and so is the directional coupler of MILO. The results show that both kinds of waveguides perform less resistant to blue laser than the TI waveguide.
