Abstract
The degree of saturation of various liquids in beds of packed monodisperse spheres as a function of pressure has been measured. The spheres were glass, with three surface states: untreated, siliconized, and coated with polymethylmethacrylate. Emphasis was placed on evaluating the effects of contact angle, independently measured, on initial wetting into a dry bed and subsequent redrying (drainage) and rewetting (imbibition). Capillary pressures for systems having the same contact angles were in reasonable agreement. Comparisons with the cylindrical tube model, which has been widely used in describing the effects of contact angle on liquid flow in porous media, provided a quantitative basis for expressing the extent to which deviations occur. © 1988.
