Abstract
The second year of the “Sustainable Middle-Aged Women’s Mental/physical
Health Study (2/2)” is the continuation of the first year study on a menopausal
self-help group. It aimed at observing both internal and external factors that promoted
empowerment of group members and the possibility of extending health management
to family or community. The role of researchers continued to be facilitators and
participating group activities through action research.
Results: (1) the effects and potential of empowerment: through the facilitation of
the researchers, women were empowered to seek strategies and take actions; (2) the
factors of empowerment enhancement: individual level – through experience sharing,
and group level – guidance for group management skills; (3) obstacles for self
empowerment enhancement: being deficient in taking initiation, less confidence on
one’s ability, lack of courage in attempting changes, fearing the authority of
physicians; (4) Obstacles for group development: being aware of financial
independence being a key ingredient of group management, but being limited with the
system of hospital, fearing of becoming an advocate for menopausal medication; (5)
Future development: promoting menopausal health in community and holistic care.
