Abstract
In this project, pH-sensitive membranes
for colon-specific drug delivery will be
synthesized by the covalent bonding of
glycine on poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol)
(EVAL) membrane via isocyanation of
surface hydroxyl groups of EVAL membrane
and subsequent conversion to activated ester.
The membranes are functioning as protective
carriers of drugs in the stomach and small
intestine. Regardless of the EVAL membrane
and the glycine-immobilized EVAL
membrane, the 5-FU permeation at pH 2.0
was small, which indicates that drugs are
protected in the acidic environment. The
permeability of 5-FU with gastric juice was
the smallest. Gastric acid and gastrointestinal
motility present a major impediment to the
development of oral colon-specific delivery
medication.
