Abstract
An empirical-based method was proposed for predicting the interstory drift time history with residual trend from the measured acceleration responses. The residual interstory drift is predicted by the proposed equation for the used accelerometer which uses a low-passed filtered relative acceleration shift as a predictor. The shaking table test data of a 3-story steel dual frame was used to develop the proposed equation for the accelerometer empirically and to validate the proposed method. The relative displacement time histories with residual trends under different excitation levels can be well recovered by using the proposed method which can be conducted without parameter adjustment. The error of the estimation of each excited shaking is acceptable for the purpose of a preliminary structural damage diagnosis. The advantages of the proposed method are that it can be easily used for structural health monitoring in real buildings, and the maximum displacement and residual displacement uncertainties of the analysis results can be well constrained.
