Abstract
The thesis develops a new linear traveling wave ultrasonic motor (USM). First, the configuration of the new linear motor is proposed. The motor consists of a stator and a rotor, and the stator is specially designed such that the traveling wave of the stator can be excited through the piezoelectric actuators. The stator is designed as a long thin plate with few legs. When driven by the piezoelectric actuators, the responses of the stator can be predicted by simulating the stator as an Euler beam. In order to decide suitable dimensions of the stator and its legs, the harmonic and transient responses of the stator are also calculated by the finite element method. Finally, the prototype of the new design is built to measure the characteristics of the motor and compared to the analytical predictions. The measured results show the correctness of the proposed design and analysis methods.
