Abstract
This study is to design a new rear wheel steering mechanism whose design objectives are: lightness, simplicity and practicability. Firstly, the correlative researches, patents and current products of rear wheel steering are investigated. A practical, simple, light design concept is developed, which is to adjust the under rear arm of multi-link suspension for steering one-side one-way rear wheel. For this concept, the acting force and power required are estimated, and the necessary specifications, drawings and solid models are made. Finally, by steady-state steering analysis, the effects of this rear wheel steering mechanism, including the failure mode, is evaluated. The rear wheel steering mechanism designed in this study, which is light, simple and practical, can actually enhance handling and stability of the vehicles at low and high speed, respectively.
