Abstract
Abstract
If a liquid drop is placed on a solid surface, the contact angle would be affected by the surface energy. If a liquid drop is placed on a specific surface consisting of alternating and parallel hydrophobic and hydrophilic strip, the contact angle of the liquid drop would be determined by the three-phase contact line normal or parallel to the strip . the three-phase contact line would be contorted or smooth along different directions of the strips. The microcontact printing was applied to fabricate alternating and parallel hydrophobic and hydrophilic of thiol self-assembled monolayers on gold surface. We also explored the effect of strip width on the contact angle. Finally, modified Cassie equation was applied to calculate the line tension value when three-phase contact line is perpendicular to the strips. It is found that the value of line tension are of the order of 10-6J/m for water surface tension.
