Abstract
Boron derivatives have found numerous applications for their intriguing optoelectronic properties. Recently, solar cells containing the chemically and thermally stable boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) have also been reported. Although successes of BODIPYs in dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) were achieved, studies on BOIDPY-containing polymers in bulk-heterojunction solar cell (BHJ) were relatively scarce. By connecting with 4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophene-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b’] dithiophene donor (BDT), a series of BODIPY-BDT low band gap conjugating polymers were synthesized and evaluated for organic photovoltaic applications. Interestingly, although the optical properties of these polymers are similar, significant discrepancies in OPV performance are observed. A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.55 % was achieved with the BODIPY(Ph)-BDT/PC71BM device. Further investigation on the thin-film morphology suggested that large dihedral angle between the meso-aryl group and BODIPY core decrease the crystallinity of the active layer and leads to low PCE value.
