Abstract
In a dense urban frequency reuse cellular environment, co-channel interference (CCI) is unavoidable due to channel reuse in neighboring cells. CCI cancellation/suppression is challenging in the downlink, because usually only one receive antenna is available at the subscriber (limited by the size and power consumption) such that the combining techniques can't be applied. Furthermore, CCI has seriously impairment when its power is comparable with the desired signal. The aim of this thesis is to design a receiver with multiuser techniques in the presence of
co-channel interference and intersymbol interference (ISI). Two receiver detection schemes: sequence estimation and symbol-by-symbol detection, are considered. For sequence estimation, a linear filter using the interference whitening concept of [20] is used in front of maximum-likelihood sequence estimation equalizer. This front-end linear filter will suppress CCI. For symbol-by-symbol detection, the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion is used for receiver design.
