Abstract
This essay is an epistemological critique of Kevin Lynch and his intellectual associates approach to city form and city design as one of the theoretical models in the current discourse of city planning The critique examines the problematic of Lynchian discursive practice its epistemological presupposition its absence and presence as the base s of our theoretical context Then we elaborate upon the substance of its theoretical discourse in three different aspects to see how Lynch dealt with these issues the built form, form context relationship, and application Finally, to conclude this epistemological review, a social critique of Lynch s perspective of city form concentrates on three methodological problems of his intellectual origins of humanism and empiricism (1) methodological presupposition (2) situated environmental image and (3) value of humanism Functioning as a counterpart to the dominant ideology in the social weflare state, the operation of Lynch's perspective in reality and its theoretical weakness need to be exposed
