Abstract
Place image is not only naturally existed but also a way to understand the world. Through observing the construction and transformation of place image, we could perceive the emotional connection between people and place, as well as complex social relationships embedded in the locality. In short, place image leads us to see the meaning and experience of the world.he author chose Tianmu of Taipei City as an example, using materials from personal observation, historical texts, information on internet and the interview from specific groups of people (so called as Bourgeoisies in this research), to illustrate the how Tianmu was constructed and needs to transform according to the research structure: symbol, memory and identity. The concept of Hegemony is applied to compare the relationships between the official ideology and the development as well as the transformation of Tianmu. The research found that the rise of Tianmu is closely related to the mainstream (official ideology), whether historical or cultural relics express place or space as the concrete practice of power. Tianmu faces the decline and the necessary transition, which also resulted in the deviation from the mainstream ideology. Recently local people launched various campaigns and each activity was the response to the past as well as the recognition of memory. Moreover, helplessly faced with no way back, residents are inspired to seek their new identity and start the development of the future through the demands and the process of these communistic movements.
